Migraine is a terrible chronicle disease. It has not only physical consequences but also social consequences. Patiënts are in many ways restricted by it in their daily life. Also they often get unsollicited advice from others such as "try hypnotherapy" or go into therapy to better deal with stress.
I am not a patient myself but I deal with it very often. I would like to present a list of points that do matter, things that have some effect and points that don't matter. This list does not deal with all migraine but with a particular patient. These points do matter: - Wearing sunglasses and/or a hat when the sun is shining,
- Taking meals always on time,
- Get up and go to bed every day at the same time,
- Stay away from the yearly company outing event: too much sun, eating too late and too much danger of dehydration,
- do not use the anticonception pill (for women),
- being pregnant (for women).
This has some positive effect but not that much: - don't drink coffee at all, there is solid scientific evidence that this helps,
- stop taking the antionception pil once a two months instead of once a month (for women)
This does not have any effect or has a negative effect: - not eating chocolate,
- not eating citrus fruits,
- not eating cheese,
- taking meals too late or skipping them,
- getting up much later than usual
I don't think that there is good scientific evidence that eating cheese, chocolate or citrus fruits causes triggers migraine. A patients suffers often in the weekend and in the evening, mainly after work. It seems that rest after a day of intensive activity can trigger migraine. Therefore I think that it would be ideal for a patient to work all seven mornings of the week and be at home 4 afternoons. |
