Chili does not have the highest life expectancy in the world. Yet extremely old people seem to have better surviving chances over there. Life tables tell us that there are relatively many people above 100 years old in Chili. If you reach above 105 then you have got more time in Chili. Both for males and females !
When looking at the statistical data of www.mortality.org the data looks OK up to and including the year 2000. This data is imaginary, extrapolated from ages below 105.
From 2001 the survival chances and the numbers of extremely old per 100000 inhabitants suddenly increase compared to before 2000. But these numbers are computed from the number of inhabitants at each age per 100000. But in 2002 there was a new population count (census), which might have overestimated the number of extremely old people. So this new population count might explain the sudden change of the numbers of extremely old people and their survival chances.
