I administer the laptop pc of my parents in law. They almost never use, only for occasional emails and for internet banking. They only use browser functionality. Just in case I also installed OpenOffice.

They are not very fluent pc users, so I set up a windows pc with a safe browser. They log in with a password but they don't have administrator rights. I also have an account on the same pc, with administrator rights of course.

I use a free virus scanner on this pc. First I used the free version of AVG. Unfortunately this version does not include a root kit. And they keep you busy with downloading and installing new versions. So I replaced the virus scanner with Microsoft Security Essentials. It does contain a root kit. New versions of MS Security Essentials are installed as windows updates, which is more convenient than the manual downloads and installations of new AVG free versions.

Often it is convenient to administer the pc remotely. I choose for installing logmein. The free version of this internet service does not provide exchanging files with the remotely controlled computer. Therefore I also installed the cygwin ssh daemon. It's not that complicated: search for "cygwin ssh daemon" for more information. To use it I first have to log in via logmein, then find out the dynamic ip address with the windows command ipconfig and finally use the ip address to connect with the program winscp to the ssh daemon.
