I had a PC with VMWare Workstation, with one group of virtual machines. The PC was not connected to any network. I started one of the virtual machines in the group. During startup I got a warning saying that something might be wrong with the network. And indeed I could not ping the virtual machine from the host computer.

As soon as I attached a network cable to the host computer and connected it to an external hub the problem disappeared.
